About 200 North Lakes residents and sporting enthusiasts braved wet conditions on Saturday (5 July) to celebrate the official opening of the Woodside Community Centre.
Highlights included: autographs by Roar Soccer Team representatives, tours of the facility, a jumping castle, face painting, balloon animals, entertainment by guitar duo Sugar Rush, a sausage sizzle, a cake cutting and an official unveiling of the building’s dedication plaque.
Deputy Mayor Greg Chippendale said this $1.1 million community building, which was
jointly funded by the council, Stocklands and the State Government, should prove to be a valuable asset to the community of North Lakes.
Councillor Chippendale commended the award-winning architect Andrew Roe, from Mode Design who included many environmentally-friendly features such as optimum ventilation, natural lighting and rainwater tanks, in his building design.
Mr Roe, who was in attendance at the opening, with his family, recently won a Commendation Award at the Queensland Architectural Awards for the design of the North Lakes Community Centre under the Best Public Building 2008.
“Woodside Community Centre will provide a focal point for community and sporting groups,
it aims to meet their needs for social, cultural, and sporting activities,” Cr Chippendale said.
Councillor Julie Greer (Div 4) said the lovely new community centre, at the intersection of Discovery Drive and Gardenia Parade, North Lakes, consisted of a hall area with a kitchen, administration office, internal toilets and an ample undercover terrace area, which was very practical in the wet weather conditions on Saturday.
Cr Greer said there were also plenty of features that catered for various sporting teams who would use the facility such as, external change rooms, a first aid room, a store room and toilet facilities for sporting groups and spectators.
“Its open hall area can accommodate up to 90 people for community functions such as weddings, anniversaries, trophy nights, meetings, seminars and regular activities such as martial arts, craft, youth, church and play groups,” she said.
Cr Greer said the Pine Rivers Neighbourhood Association had been awarded the management rights and would be supported by an advisory group of representatives of regular users of the centre.
